 Layout of canal system The main components in a canal system are as : 1. Canal head works 2. Head regulator 3. Main canal 4. Branch canal 5. Distributaries- (a) major and (b) minor 6. Field channels 1. Canal Head Regulator These are constructed at the head of main canal for diverting water in it from the river for irrigation purposes are called canal head works. They are also known as diversion head works. 2. Head Regulator These are constructed at the head of the main canal for regulating the supply of the canal and to prevent the entry of the silt particles into the canal is known as head regulator. 3. Main Canal A canal taken- off directly from the river is called main canal. 4. Branch canal A canal taken-off from the main canal is known as branch canal. The minimum discharge carried by branch canal is 5.5 cumecs. 5. Distributaries A small channel taken –off from the branch canal is called Distributary.
